Belly Balusters
The Power of the Curve in Railing Design
For centuries, architects and craftsmen have understood the expressive power of the curve. While straight lines communicate strength and order, curves introduce movement, depth, and visual interest.
In railing design, this principle is beautifully realized through belly balusters, also known as bow or balcony balusters. Their outward curve breaks the flat plane of a handrail, adding dimension and a refined flourish reminiscent of a historic Juliette balcony, Southern verandas, and European town homes.
Crafted for Control and Precision
At Twisted Bars, we have refined the art of producing belly balusters that offer precise control over the final look and feel of a project. These specialized railing components allow designers to achieve dimensional elegance without the complexity of custom fabrication.

Customizing the Curve
Belly pickets can be tailored to meet a wide range of architectural goals, allowing subtle refinement or bold visual impact depending on the application.
- Variable Protrusions allow the curve to range from gently bowed to deeply pronounced. A soft belly introduces understated elegance, while a more dramatic curve suits ornate or Baroque-inspired designs.
- With or Without a “Nose” gives control over the top detail. Including a nose creates a traditional, finished appearance, while omitting it results in a cleaner, more continuous line suited to modern aesthetics.
- With or Without a Straight “Tail” affects mounting options. Tailed pickets are designed for standard bottom-rail installation, while tailless designs enable creative applications such as side mounting to a rim joist for a floating effect.
Texture, Form, and Installation Ease
The character of belly balusters can be further enhanced through surface treatment and shaping. Plain material follow the curve smoothly for a refined look, while hammered textures add artisanal depth and light-catching detail well suited to Mediterranean or Spanish Revival styles.
Twists may also be incorporated along the belly, on the sloped sections, or within the straight top portion, each placement creating a distinct visual rhythm. Available in square, flat, or round material, and offered with optional hammered textures or twists, these baluster are supplied as ready-to-install pieces. This approach allows high-end, dimensional railing designs to be executed with confidence, consistency, and ease.
